Julia Yarbough Emmy Award Winning Journalist

 

  • 25+ years as a broadcast and print journalist, Julia Yarbough’s on-air television, public speaking and professional writing and production experience reaches across multiple platforms.

  • In addition to a successful career in journalism, Julia also holds the distinction of having served as a family caregiver. She managed the affairs and well-being of her elderly mother for close to twenty years, until the passing of her mother, in September, 2020.

  • During her broadcast career, Julia chased news in the field and brought viewers nightly news reports, most recently with KHSL-TV in Chico, California. Julia’s anchoring and reporting experience include positions in the studios of NBC6-WTVJ, in Miami, KCBS2 in Los Angeles, WSVN, South Florida, WLKY, Louisville, Kentucky, WEAR, Pensacola, Florida and KEYT, in Santa Barbara.

I love telling stories. It’s just that simple. When I know a viewer or reader is seeing what I’m seeing and feeling what I’m feeling, then I have been successful. That’s what it is all about – the stories.

That passion for telling stories now includes the field of family caregiving

With the creation of Keeping it REAL Caregiving Julia’s goal is to assist others navigate caring for loved ones.

Her experience in news and reporting will come in handy in this next career phase, of creating content for an audience short on time, but long on desire to have MORE INFORMATION!

During her career, Julia produced live reports from all over South Florida as well as exotic International locations, such as the 2006 winter and 2008 Summer Olympics in Torino, Italy and Beijing, China, respectively. Never one to run from adventure and excitement, Julia flew an F-16 with the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds! Named “Best Female News Anchor” by the Broward New Times, Julia’s work has earned her professional and personal recognition and helped her build a following of loyal television viewers and on-line social media fans. It also caught the attention of movie director Michael Mann, casting Julia in MIAMI VICE, the movie and landed her a one-on-one interview with music superstars Daryl Hall & John Oates.

Julia has received numerous awards including:

  • Selected as a 2022 American Society on Aging ASA Rise Fellow
  • Twice the prestigious N.A.T.A.S. Emmy
  • The Sunshine State Award from The Society of Professional Journalists
  • The 2009 Fellowship with The Institutes of Journalism & Natural Resources
  • In 2011 Julia was named one of Broward County’s “100 Outstanding Women.”
  • Most recently, she was named as a 2020 participant with the Gerontological Society of America Journalists in Aging Fellows Program.
  • Julia also contributes articles to the online magazine journal, Next Avenue.

The launch of Keeping it REAL Caregiving is in line with Julia’s lifelong passion bringing impactful stories to the public. Past projects have focused on social entrepreneurship and those living single.

The inspiration for the creation of Julia Yarbough Media Group, was the result of one of Julia’s most exciting life-altering experiences; a 26 state, cross-country road trip called Highway to a Husband; a journey to find “Mr. Right.” With fans and followers from over 85 different countries, the quest to “find Mr. Right” landed Julia on NBC’s The Today Show, CNN and caught the attention of The Nate Berkus Show allowing Julia to serve as a contributor to the show for several months. Julia’s Highway to a Husband journey has been featured in EBONY Magazine, on Essence.com, radio and television stations across the country and television broadcasts in Australia. Highway to a Husband has inspired and motivated on-line fans around the country to seek Create Change in their own lives and is the inspiration for the forthcoming Highway to a Husband book; a practical guidebook based upon lessons learned from the epic road journey on Creating Change in one’s life, living Authentically, Facing Fears and Being You!

With the launch of Julia Yarbough Media Group, LLC Julia is also forged partnerships with organizations, corporations and individuals to identify and produce stories that have a positive impact on our society and world. In October, 2013 Julia was commissioned to co-produce a documentary for GE/Africa spending three weeks in Tanzania, Ethiopia and Kenya.

Known for her passion for the outdoors and issues of diversity, Julia partnered with NOLS – National Outdoor Leadership School to co-produce and promote a film documenting the first all African-American climbing team to attempt to summit Alaska’s DENALI in June, 2013. Julia’s work has gained national attention as a result of her partnership with The HabiHut and GE to produce a video presentation in Nairobi, Kenya highlighting The HabiHut, a revolutionary new solar-powered water kiosk. Julia’s production credits also include segments for The Broward County Minority Builder’s Coalition and Children’s Harbor Foster Care Agency; featuring the community work of the respective agencies.

A graduate of The University of California, Santa Barbara with a B.A. in Economics, Julia began her journalism career as a print journalist for The Daily Nexus campus newspaper.

When not interviewing subjects for written articles and video compilations or creating new avenues for social media outreach, you can find Julia either cooking, biking, kayaking, practicing photography or speaking to organizations about the importance of finding passion in one’s life and taking necessary steps to prepare for the role of family caregiver.
