Aging of America: Elderly Costs | Courtesy Al Jazeera America
Aging of America: Elderly Costs put the spotlight on what was already becoming a leading issue in the United States almost ten years ago. Keeping it REAL Caregiving creator Julia Yarbough produced the segment for Al Jazeera America television.
This segment features a South Florida woman who had the responsibility of taking care of her elderly aunt.
At the time of this filming, Yarbough had little understanding of the challenges of family caregiving. When you watch this segment you see first hand the daily duties many caregivers face.
But this story also show LOVE. Because despite the daily challenges, we learn how a family member goes above and beyond.
One aspect of this family journey to take note of: it may not always be a mother or father needing care.
Now is the time to think about your family members and ask yourself…
- could I one day be a caregiver?
- what resources might I need to begin putting in place now?
- what financial resources are available moving forward?
- who else in my circle could I turn to for help?
We hope you enjoy meeting the woman in this segment and learn from their experiences. Sadly, the elderly woman featured, Aunt Hilda, has since passed.
KIRC extends our condolences despite the passage of years and we are grateful for the opportunity to have met and spent time with Aunt Hilda.
And for this family, the challenges continued beyond the passing of their loved one. The reality is there are many ‘logistical’ aspects of life and death that outlast our living years.
Look for future posts discussing some of the issues related to the passing of a loved one, including preparing legal documents, having a plan in place for burial and navigating the tough talks about end-of-life planning. Plus, understanding some of the benefits available to someone with Medicare coverage.
