Project Description

Intergenerational friendship Alaska to California is more than just a blog post or video interview.

This segment truly drives to the heart of what it means to forge bonds across age groups, distance and time.

Everyone has a story

I’ve always believed there is a story (and reason) behind each person we cross paths with. Sometimes we know instantly why a certain person is in our lives. Other times, we may not get a clear picture until years later. Yet for others, we may never know why The Universe chose to put two people in the same place at the same time.

Your KIRC creator is thankful for the chance meeting with the woman who you will now meet in this segment.

It was the summer of 2009. I was making my first (and so far only) trip to Alaska. For those who have yet to visit, it really is like nowhere else. It is wild. Untamed. Harsh. Beautiful.

It is almost fitting that I met Carylee K. in such a unique locale as Alaska, because she is about as unique a woman one will find – anywhere. She and Alaska are well-suited!

Intergenerational friendship across the years and miles

Our friendship formed during a short 10-day visit to the region. Once I returned home, I stayed in touch. We’ve seen each other only once since then, but have remained in contact via letters, emails and phone calls.

Adopt-an-elder

So what does it really mean when we say ‘intergenerational friendship?’ I think I have it down.

If you ask why I have repeatedly gravitated towards friends who are 10, 20, 30 years older than myself, I doubt I would have a clear answer. Other than to say, I believe there is a type of wisdom that only comes with age.

It also seems to be the case that women – no matter their backgrounds or life circumstances – tend to share similar challenges and triumphs. There seems to be a bond that women of any age can share and strengthen when they allow the connection to grow organically.

So with that, here’s a little glimpse of a friendship with no clear-cut explanations. Other than, when I meet people who strike my fancy, I like to hang on to them, learn from them and share their stories with others.
