Like most ideas, this newsletter is an evolving work. The direction we take in 2022 will depend in large part on the input, feedback and participation of all of you.

I couldn’t be more proud of the work produced this year! Let’s take a look:

#ICYMI – KIRC presents…

…several earlier and overlooked KIRC articles which despite the passage of time, contain what I believe to be useful, helpful and always relevant material.

  1. I wish I had

They say hindsight is 20/20. Perhaps in no space is that more true than family caregiving. There is so much we all learn along the way which would be helpful to already know at the beginning of the journey.

For this article, I asked other caregivers to share some of what they have learned which would be valuable to others.

  1. Can your bathroom become dangerous?

This article is timeless. I can’t stress enough how crucial it is to review the safety features of bathrooms which elders use. This is the one room in your home that can turn on you in an instant: hard tile, slick wet floors, electrical outlets near water, TUBS… YIKES. Just remember: grab bars can be your friend!

The next topic you may have missed hit your in-boxes as a two-part segment. Our focus: long term care options. This can be such a confusing and overwhelming topic and one that is uniquely personal for each individual and family.

  1. Part one: Gambling with your future

The goal here, was to get you at least thinking about your financial futures. This is especially true for women and even more so for women of color. Statistically, the numbers simply do not always add up to ensure a solid, safe and financially comfortable final stage of life for many women.

To try and sort through some of the basics of what we need to know, I reached out to a friend, former journalist and now financial planner, to get some guidance.

In part two, we went a little deeper.

3.5 Yes… you REALLY do have long term care options!

For those of you who live in California, this topic needs to be on our radar. KIRC will be digging into this more in 2022, but the California Insurance Commissioner also has long term care on his radar. A task force is in place with meetings slated to resume in the new year. There’s a good chance we should anticipate some changes coming in the not too distant future.

  1. The good, the bad, the turkey & don’t forget the pie

Simply put, this story is intended to make all of us think about how fragile life is and how each moment could potentially be the last. My wish is that everyone consider this when interacting with loved ones, family and friends – especially your elders.

And finally, one of my favorites! It is a story I think serves as a solid reminder that aging in and of itself does not necessarily equal decline and despair.

  1. Prescriptions for living your best life

This story is a heartwarming and poignant reminder that we all have opportunities to get the most of our lives and the people we love. Meeting and chatting with the elder featured here, showed me that we truly should cherish each and every single moment along this life journey!

I’m striving to embrace that approach to how I live my life. I hope that by sharing these KIRC stories, experiences and shared knowledge, that it ultimately helps all of you do the same.
