California poppies, conferences and changing laws – stay in the loop!
Before we dive into a review of some of the events coming up this week, I want all of you to take a moment to step back and give yourselves a big hug!
Anyone who has been, still is or, is about to move into the world of family or professional caregiving knows it is not easy. It can be downright overwhelming.
So with that, please accept a huge THANK YOU and an offering of these gorgeous California poppies brightening up my backyard.
Now, let’s take a look at what is going on this week.
In full disclosure, your Keeping it REAL Caregiving correspondent is now a member of the American Society on Aging (ASA), so in upcoming calendars, I may share more of what ASA has to offer.
I am proud to share that I will also be attending the annual conference as part of the ASA Rise Fellowship program. This should be a wonderful opportunity to learn more ways I can deliver information and resources direct to all of you! Look for stories and interviews from the conference in the coming weeks!

Safety resource
Did you know falls are the leading cause of injury (some deadly) for those over age 65?
If you are a caregiver or are adding up the years yourself, it is important to learn how to prevent falls and what could happen if we don’t!

Sometimes having those conversations with a loved one or elder can be tough. But, there is a handy resource through the National Council on Aging which has useful information and guidance for tackling a tough topic.
It walks us through the reasons why falls are so dangerous, steps to take for prevention, and gives a roadmap for how to initiate and have the conversations.
Check out the National Council on Aging Falls Prevention Conversation Guide.

In this case, the focus is not specifically on elders, but rather those facing disability.
KIRC wanted to share this item as there are often cross-over points for elders who encounter situations of also being disabled or facing limited mobility.
If you are in the Raleigh, NC region or know someone who could benefit, please share this information.
Event description: The conference aims to amplify the voices and experiences of Black disabled communities living in North Carolina. Therefore, it will serve two purposes. First, it will bring three seemingly disparate groups – academics, service providers, and practitioners – together with Black disabled communities.

In the news
There are changes to laws impacting staffing for New York State nursing homes, specifically laws which set minimum staffing ratios for nurse to patient care.
KIRC is hopeful other states will follow the lead of New York and make it mandatory to have more care staff in place to adequately serve the needs of clients.
