What happens in Vegas… sometimes has to be shared!
Your correspondent spent part of this past week in Nevada, attending the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) annual convention.
My role was moderating a panel during the Diversity Symposium, ‘Start with Inclusion to Build the Brand and Attract the Best Talent.’
This discussion was quite similar to the training KIRC is undergoing with the American Society on Aging as a Fellow with the ASA Rise Program, which is focused on identifying and training a more diverse talent pool of emerging leaders in the field of aging.
As a journalist, a family caregiver and now a student of diversity, equity and inclusion training (DEI), I believe there is clear connection between the fields of aging and media/broadcast.
Consider this: if those who control the creation and distribution of content, images and perceptions across mass media do not have an understanding of, or respect for the realities of aging and caregiving, how dedicated are those individuals to ensuring vital information reaches those who need it the most?
Part of my inspiration for launching Keeping It Real Caregiving was that I didn’t believe it should be so difficult for any of us to care for our aging loved ones. Part of the challenge is simply finding the information you need.
In honor of my recent travels to Nevada: if you or a loved one lives in Nevada, here are some starting points I hope will help you.
The Department of Health & Human Services Aging and Disability Services Division
You can visit the website and here is some of the information:
Aging and Disability Services Division Office Locations
To report suspected abuse, neglect, exploitation, isolation or abandonment of vulnerable adults, age 18-59, in addition to persons 60 years and older and/or to report complaints to the Adult Rights Intake unit, please utilize these phone numbers:
Las Vegas/Clark County (702) 486-6930
Statewide/All other areas (888) 729-0571
If an older person or vulnerable person is in immediate danger, the local police, sheriff’s office or emergency medical service should be contacted. If the person is not in immediate danger, the report should be made via one of the designated phone numbers.
There are four regional offices which operate to provide a range of services. Those are known as Nevada Care Connection Resource Centers. (The phone numbers for the correct counties can be seen in the image below)
You can access help through the website – OR – you can call the 2-1-1 service to point you in the right direction.

ICYMI In case you missed it
What is the BENES 2.0 Act?
This piece of legislation aims to close current gaps in the Medicare enrollment system which can sometimes lead to individuals paying fines – for years – if they miss their initial sign-up window.
This charge is being led by U.S. Senators Bob Casey (D-PA) and Todd Young (R-IN), and it has bi-partisan support.
As explained in a recent press release from Senator Casey:
People who miss their initial Medicare enrollment window may pay lifetime late enrollment penalties. In 2020, about 776,000 people with Medicare were paying a Part B Late Enrollment Penalty (LEP) and the average LEP amounted to nearly a 27 percent increase in a beneficiary’s monthly premium.
