KIRC invites you to start your Sunday with Coffee Chat & Support then stay plugged-in throughout the week

The field of eldercare and caregiving is huge, with many moving parts.

While it can feel overwhelming for those of us in the caregiving space, Keeping it REAL Caregiving is encouraged by the number of people dedicating their energies to improving the systems currently in place to care for our elders and loved ones!

News from around the webโ€ฆ

#ICYMIโ€ฆ The Associated Press reports on the latest from the California legislature and votes impacting skilled nursing facilities.

As reported, โ€œCalifornia lawmakers on Monday moved to strengthen the stateโ€™s oversight of nursing homes, barring anyone from operating a skilled nursing facility without a license.

Democratic Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi said his bill would give the California Department of Public Health stronger authority to block unqualified and unethical owners by shutting down what he said is an increasing number of for-profit nursing home chains operating unlicensed nursing homes.

โ€œThis bill seeks to fix a broken state licensing system,โ€ Muratsuchi said.

The problem has only been exacerbated by the pandemic, endangering thousands of those who are elderly or disabled, said Democratic Assemblyman Jim Wood.

โ€œPart of what weโ€™re trying to do is protect some of the most vulnerable people in our society,โ€ Wood said. โ€œWeโ€™ve seen too many perish in nursing homes during COVID. Weโ€™re seeing another wave of it now. Theyโ€™re a fragile population.โ€

The report goes on to indicate, The California Association of Health Facilities, which represents most of the stateโ€™s nursing homes, opposed the bill without further amendments, but agreed that the process needs reform.
