Nightmare come to life in Ukraine.
If only this title and headline was something of fiction. Completely made-up. To the horror of the world, it is not.
Unprecedented times call for extraordinary response. I am asking all of you to join me and Keeping it REAL Caregiving, to help support the American Red Cross in response and relief efforts in Ukraine.
American Red Cross Donations
You can make a tax-deductible donation right here and it goes directly to the American Red Cross. I see it as a small way to do ‘something’ to help those escaping for their lives from Ukraine.
In a recent article in the Keeping it REAL Caregiving newsletter at Meta Bulletin, I shared a similar position. You can read the full article here.
Can nightmares come to pass?
We probably NEVER imagined we would witness moments like what are unfolding in Ukraine. It truly is a living nightmare.
These images chill all of us to the bone. It also takes me back to the final years caregiving for my mother.
During that time I experienced a recurring nightmare.
In that nightmare, we experienced some kind of massive emergency and needed to evacuate quickly! The images which played out in my head are clear as day. Probably because it felt so real and was incredibly horrifying.
Something bad was happening and we needed to ‘go NOW!’ My mother would say, “You go. I’ll slow you down. You people need to get your things and move. I’ve lived my life. You go! Don’t worry about me – go.”
I recall grabbing food items, shoving things in a go-bag, checking for weapons and extra ammo, hugging, kissing and crying my eyes out, then accepting that I was going to have to leave my mother behind…
Thankfully, it was just a nightmare.
I woke up.
But for the people of Ukraine this horror is real. It breaks my heart. I am angry. I am terrified of what this could mean for our world. I am anguished thinking about all the families trying to save themselves, their children and their elders.
